A Tagline is typically a one line quote, saying, or humorous text that is appended to e-mail signatures and e-mail messages on most Bulletin Board Systems. On a BBS, though, it is automated by the BBS computer and you cannot use that feature in any other message, be it Internet mail or a letter to friends.
* What is it?
Tagline will copy a random tagline from the "Taglines" file (which was originally distributed with over 400 taglines in it; you can add more if you wish) and copy an e-mail signature from the "Signature" file and paste them to the clipboard. This is fully automated for your convenience. Once you launch Tagline, you can paste your random signature into any text document or e-mail message, or practically anything that supports the standard Edit menu.
* How do I use it?
As I said before, Tagline will copy a random tagline from the "Taglines" file. When I first distributed this program, I included a 400+ tagline file so you didn't have to make up your own. This is just a plain text file, and it can be opened and edited in any word processor. (Hint: open it in ClarisWorks or another program capable of supporting a database, and then convert the Taglines file to a database. Then you can sort them, select and delete them, and add new taglines much easier than with SimpleText or another word processor.) There are some restrictions for the Taglines file, however. You can only have 2500 taglines before you meet Taglines built in limit. I suggest no more than 1000, mainly because after that the program's convenience and speed decreases and you have to increase the memory requirements. (Besides, do you really need more than 1000 taglines?) Each tagline has to be one line long, with a return character signifying the end of a tagline. Each tagline can only be a maximum of 256 characters.
As I also said before, Tagline will copy the "Signature" file (also a plain text file) and paste that file and a random tagline onto the clipboard. There are no real restrictions with the Signature file, except that it cannot be more than 256 characters long. Also, Tagline appends the random tagline at the very end of the signature; unless otherwise desired, you should add an extra return after the signature for the tagline.
The program itself is simple. You launch it in the same folder as the "Taglines" and "Signature" files (with System 7, you can make aliases to put in the Apple Menu or a launcher type utility), it reads from the Taglines file until either the file is finished or it reaches the 2500 tagline limit, reads in the signature, appends the random tagline to the signature, and pastes the combination to the clipboard. There is no user interaction except for the initial launch and the editing of the files involved.
* What use it is to me?
I use it for my e-mail messages (actually, I use it's bigger brother, SigWizard; I'll explain that later), message postings, and other documents. It is a handy program once you find it's use for you. I suggest using it in e-mail and postings like I do, at least to try it out. You may find another use for it, and if so, please e-mail me so I can tell everyone else in the next version. :)
* Is this shareware?
Luckily for you, no. I feel that information should be shared, as everyone should believe. However, some authors (including myself on occasion) request a small amount of loose change in order to keep the Chinese food and the phone bill paid for :) This is called shareware, and I believe in it 100%. This program is freeware only because it is a small little hack I threw together because my friend didn't like the way I made SigWizard (there's that name again!).
* What is SigWizard?
SigWizard is another project I am working on right now that is very similar to Tagline in that it will copy a random tagline and signature and paste them to the clipboard. Of course, SigWizard (deemed the Big Brother of Tagline) can do much more than Tagline. SigWizard allows for two (2) signatures, a Taglines file and a Quotes file (the difference is that Quotes could be used for those of us who were born without a sense of humor), and the ability to edit your signatures in the program itself. Of course, as of 7/26/96, SigWizard has those features, but there is the possibility that more may be added before it is finished. * Requirements
Tagline will work with System 6.0.7 or later and System 7 (and maybe earlier versions of System 6), about 1000k of memory (can work in less, but you may get memory errors), 2000k preferred. Tagline does not use any colors, windows, menus, etc. so you can have any type of monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, and modem you choose. (This program is amazingly flexible.) Of course, you have to have a sense of humor, and you have to be mature enough to understand some of the taglines originally distributed (although none of them are in bad taste).
